.TEL IDNs Launching June 15, Preorder Now with Name.com!

Starting on 2010-06-15 14:00 UTC, companies and individuals will be able to register IDNs in the TEL domain extension. Registrations will be on a first come first served basis and they will be available in the following languages: Chinese, Danish, Finnish, German, Hungarian, Icelandic, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish. Of course if you want to be a step ahead and make sure you get the name that you want, you can preorder your .TEL IDN with Name.com between now and the June 15 launch!

The launch of these new IDNs gives you an opportunity to secure your digital business card in your native language and for businesses this means an improved user experience for your customers and the opportunity to expand and maintain your brand in foreign markets.

It’s projected that by 2015 there will be 2.5 billion smartphone sales and in a world that’s going mobile, .TEL is thinking ahead. With this extension you can penetrate markets where people are primarily accessing the internet from smartphones and markets where English and ASCII are not primarily used. You can also fully manage your .TEL from your smartphone, making it easy and convenient to make changes on the fly.

Speaking of easy and convenient, remember that with .TEL no hosting costs are required. You just purchase the domain and you’re good to go! Setup can also be done in minutes, so if you’re looking for something low cost and low maintenance, then .TEL might just be the right solution for you.

Your TV is Next in Google’s Quest for World Domination

This fall Google hopes to solve the disjointed relationship between the web and TV with Google TV. Using both Android and Chrome, Google TV is basically a search engine for your TV — integrating with your cable box and indexing however many hundreds of channels you have with whatever is available on the web. It lets you watch what you want when you want.

While this will no doubt have an impact on TV, some are also wondering what this means in the world of domains. For .TV it’s probably not too bad a thing. The idea of a one stop shop for your video content is essentially what the .TV extension is made for, and Google is taking the concept mainstream. This can only help drive awareness for the already popular extension and we think you’ll start to see it crop up in a lot more places.

As big believers in .TV we hope that with the best prices and best support you’ll think of Name.com when you go to register your .TV, and our new pricing should definitely help in that regard! Starting today we are now offering one year .TV registrations for the low price of $10.99! But wait..it gets better. If you register a .TV for two or more years, you get it for the super low price of just $9.99/year. Still want more? For the month of June you can use the code SHOWTIME for $29.99 .TV renewals!

This brings the pricing for .TV registrations within a couple bucks of .COM and breaks down the $10, $20, and even (at some registrars) $30 price difference that may have prevented you from jumping on the .TV bandwagon. With that barrier gone, now’s your chance to join the fun!

Name.com offering "real" $6.99 transfers!

We’re out there listening every day on Twitter, forums and blogs and we see so many people who are unhappy with their current registrar. For those that are tired of settling for the status quo, we are excited to announce that Name.com is now offering a “real” $6.99 transfer promotion for .COM and .NET domains. We say “real” because there are no hidden costs, no promo codes, no limit to the number domains you can transfer, no secret handshake, and you only pay $6.99 per domain! Also, when you transfer your domain to Name.com we add an additional year of registration to your current renewal date for FREE. In addition to .COM and .NET, our transfer pricing for other extensions is extremely competitive, you can see our complete pricing list below:

We also want to help our customers save money this year in another way. As some of you are probably aware, Verisign is increasing the price of .COM and .NET registrations on July 1, 2010, so transferring your domains now will save you money, lots of money. When you transfer your domain you extend your renewal period for an additional year for free. Avoid paying higher renewal costs for an additional twelve months and save as much as $3 per domain by transferring to us today!

We’re confident that with our services, tools, and customer support we can turn your headaches into smiles and groans into sighs of relief. We think you deserve better and we can offer you better and put money back in your pocket at the same time!

Headed to GeoDomain Expo!

Our bags are packed (okay maybe not yet) and we’re headed off to the big easy for three jazz-filled days of domains and networking! Geodomains are nothing new, but like anything “location-based” these days, they are starting to gain more mainstream popularity. If you’re a small business, this presents a great opportunity to geo-target your customers. If you’re a domainer, there is ample opportunity to build out and monetize a geodomain.

We’ll admit, we’ve been excited about geodomains for some time now. If you haven’t checked it out already, our Geodomain search tool is a pretty nifty project we’ve been working on. But shameless plugs aside, we’re really excited for the sessions and networking events that Associated Cities have lined up for this year’s GeoDomain Expo. If you’re going to be in New Orleans this week and you want to meet up, give us a shout! We’d love to meet you.

Domain Nabber Grows Up and Leaves Beta

As of this morning, our Domain Nabber backorder service is officially out of beta! We’ve been working hard on our nabber for the past few months and we’re excited to say that it is now ready for prime time. Huge thanks to all of the customers that provided feedback during the beta period — you helped us make the service even better!

Nabbing .COM and .NET domains now costs $49.95 and, as always, there is no risk in placing a backorder. If we don’t nab the name for you we’ll give you a full refund or account credit, your choice!

Speaking of choices, we’ve recently added .INFO into the mix, making it a total of seven extensions that you can backorder through Domain Nabber. Keep an eye out for even more extensions in the future as we continue improving this service to help you nab even more names!

April is all about ME..err..YOU!

This month we’re focusing on you. Name.com is offering .ME registrations for just $7.99 and renewals for just $14.99 with the code ALLABOUTU !

.ME is becoming a more popular TLD and we’ve started to notice it gaining some traction. In the social media space, two new services have popped up fairly recently that have embraced this extension to help make things a little more personal.

Flavors.me is a slick service that lets you put up a website easily and add all of your content from other services like Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, and many others. We dig it. Plus if you get their premium service you can use a custom domain name, and we always like to see that.

Formspring.me is a really clever way to interact and get to know people through random questions. So if you’ve just been dying to ask your friend how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop, now you can without feeling like a weirdo.

.ME can be used for regional purposes as well, helping to create a sense of community right off the bat. A great example of this is Boulder.me, a startup resource for our Colorado neighbors. From a community perspective, there is a lot of potential for .ME.

Now for the domainers out there, there’s currently a .ME auction going on over at NameJet and there’s a great opportunity to snatch up some first name domains. The personal names auction ends some time next week, so you’ll need to act fairly fast to get your bids in.

Cheers and happy bidding!

Save Money on Your Custom Posterous Domain With Name.com!

Here at Name.com we’re big fans of services like Posterous and Tumblr. They make blogging dead simple and help make people’s jump into the blogging world a much less intimidating one. Now Posterous has just announced a custom domain service that allows you to register a domain directly through their site, making it easy to customize your blog. The catch — you’re limited to COM/NET/ORG and these registrations cost you $24.99 for one year and $19.99 for two. Ouch.

If you were to do the very same thing through Name.com, it would be a fraction of the cost in exchange for a couple more clicks. You also have the option to use quite a few more extensions if you go this route, since the name you want might not necessarily be available in COM/NET/ORG. Take my Posterous blog for example, I decided to go with sproutic.us.

After purchasing the domain you just have to go to your Account and click on the domain name.

Then click on your DNS Management settings on the right hand side.

Create two A Records for your domain that point to 67.207.139.81:

  • one that you leave blank before the domain
  • one with an * before the domain

Add your domain name to your Posterous settings, SAVE, and…

voila! Your blog is now set up with your very own domain.

Not bad, and it can save you a decent chunk of change depending on the domain name. If you’re looking for Google Apps, we can help you there too — you can easily enable and access the Google Apps setup from your account to hook your new blog up with its very own email, calendar, docs, etc!

Have a Posterous blog already? Post a link in the comments, we’d love to check it out! You can subscribe to Name.com’s Posterous here.

Name.com Proudly Offering Premium .TV Domains!

VeriSign recently announced a re-launch of all premium .TV domains with drastically reduced pricing, and Name.com is happy to announce that we can offer these premium domains to our customers! Premium .TV domains can now be registered for as little as a few hundred dollars for the first year and standard renewal pricing after that. The best part is that Name.com is able to offer most of these names at prices lower than our competitors.

We’re big fans of the .TV extension and we’re excited to see the market opened up to more people. It’s a great move for the .TV community and we look forward to seeing it grow.

Name.com is also offering regular .TV registrations for just $19.99 for a limited time! So whether you’re looking to invest or just start your own video blog, Name.com can help. If you have any questions about .TV don’t hesitate to give us a shout.

Domain registrations close in on 200 million, what this means for the consumer

Verisign has recently reported that TLD registrations are closing in on the 200 million mark. There’s no denying it — this number is huge. It can also be intimidating for the average consumer to hear this. With 200 million domain names registered there can’t possibly be any good ones left. Wrong.

Just about every day we spend listening on Twitter we hear people say how surprised they are at how many good domain names are still available. You just have to start being creative. If you’re not necessarily the creative type, there are tools out there to help you. Take our Domain Suggestion Tool for example. You can type in a set of keywords and not only get related suggestions back, but also suggestions based on popular Google keyword searches. Trust me, you can spend hours using this tool and coming across great names that you weren’t even thinking of, I certainly have.

Another thing to consider is the increasing popularity of alternative extensions and ccTLDs. While sprouticus.com may not be available (something I’ve pouted about for years), sproutic.us is and that’s almost as good, at least in my case. Nowadays more and more people are starting to do the same. For instance, check out Claim.io and Flavors.me, two recently launched services that are embracing alternative extensions.

Some other great extensions that are starting to become really popular are .MOBI and .TV. If you’re looking to cater specifically to mobile devices, a .MOBI domain is the way to go. If you’re doing video at all, .TV is perfect — just check out Name.com’s very own Beer Fridays! Now these are just a few examples, but there are a whole slew of extensions that you can choose from to suit either your personal or business needs. It’s not just about .COM and .NET anymore.

So the moral of the story is not to get discouraged that there are a bazillion domain names being registered out there. There’s still some good names to be found, and great names are dropping all the time. You just have to know where to look.
