The New Domains—like .GURU and .NINJA—are awesome. They haven’t quite garnished the level of love that they’re going to attain one day, but they’re very well on their way to doing so. When you consider how disruptive technology is typically adopted, it’s easy to see that we’re on the right track to having explosive growth in New Domain registrations, because people are realizing that the New Domains are an evolution of the Internet, rather than a revolution. The New Domains as an extension and progression of the .COM era.

People are embracing New Domains because they feel like there is less risk involved in adopting the new names. They’re realizing that the New Domains are actually going to fulfill their promise of giving businesses a competitive advantage online and make the Internet a more organized place.

The people who are realizing the potential of New Domains right now are early technology adopters. They’re the type of people who like to have the first of everything. These people are extremely valuable to a new technology because they can get pretty vocal about their enthusiasm, and they’re the people who are ultimately going to propel a new and disruptive technology to mainstream glory.

If the right early adopters start creating generous buzz about New Domains, the rest of the world will take notice and start using them as well. Once people start putting their creations online, a value proposition about New Domains that describes why they’re awesome will naturally appear, and they’ll start to become a mainstream technology.

The way that New Domains are being adopted can easily be compared to Tesla’s introduction into the auto market. When Tesla vehicles were introduced, they were something cool and new, and they functioned much like other cars, except they were quieter and had less impact on the environment than “old” cars. New Domains are similar to Teslas, because New Domains operate the same way as “old” domains, but offer plenty of great advantages over those traditional extensions. Both Teslas and New Domains are disruptive products that are low risk to use and are simply an evolution of a mainstream technology.

It’s hard to deny that the New Domains are awesome and will soon be the Internet norm. It’s only a matter of time before you go from wondering if you should buy a New Domain to thinking “which New Domain should I buy next?”
