Passwords can be pretty tricky to guess as long as you’re not lazy when creating them. By keeping a few best practices in mind, you can create a password that will be extremely tough to crack.
But it’s a big bad internet world, and there’s still a chance your username and password combo could be compromised. That’s why we provide a 100 percent absolutely free way to add an extra layer of protection to your account. It’s called NameSafe.
How it works
If you don’t have NameSafe activated, logging into your name.com account is just like logging into most websites: you use a username and password combo. NameSafe makes it so you need a second password to log in—a six-digit code that is generated by a (free) app on your smartphone and is only valid for 30 seconds (and then a new code is generated).
First, you need to download the Verisign VIP Access app on your smartphone. It’s available on all popular mobile operating systems, including iOS, Android, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone (download from your phone’s app store, or by navigating to m.vip.symantec.com). Once it’s installed and set up on your phone, it should display a Credential ID and a Security Code. The Credential ID is your ID—it’ll never change, and you’ll use it to link the app to your name.com account. The Security Code regenerates every 30 seconds, and it’s what you’ll use as the second password for your name.com account.
Log in to your name.com account, go to the “Security” tab, and click on “NameSafe.” You’ll click through a page that has some basic information about the service, (which we just covered) and then arrive at the “Add Credential” page.
Here, create a credential alias (it’s just a description, I used “iPhone App”), enter the Credential ID from the VIP Access app on your phone, and enter the corresponding six-digit security code. You’ll also have to fill out a brief form with security questions (helpful if you lose access to your smartphone). Once you’re done, you should see the credential on your NameSafe Management screen. You’re done!
The next time you log in to your name.com account, at first it’ll appear as if nothing has changed. You’ll enter your username and password and click the login button. But instead of immediately proceeding to your account, a “Security Code” field will appear. Open your VIP Access app on your phone, type in the six-digit security code that it generates, and you can finish logging in.
Now if someone wants to break in to your account, they’ll not only need your username and password, but also the six-digit code that is only active for 30 seconds and can only be accessed on your own personal phone. Pretty cool, huh?
