NameSafe VIP - FAQ

What is the NameSafe VIP service
NameSafe VIP service is a two-factor authentication method for use on your Name.com account to add additional security to your account and the domains located within.
Why should I use the hardware credential?
Because it gives you an extra layer of security when you log into your account. Most websites keep your online account safe by only asking for your username and password to verify your identity. The hardware credential gives you an additional security code that only you know about. That makes your account more resistant to intrusion. Plus, the hardware credential is easy to use.
What exactly is the hardware credential?
It's a small electronic device or card that generates a unique security code for your account about every 30 seconds. You use that code to access your account, and to help prevent people that you don't know from doing the same. It's like a combination lock for your account, except that the combination always changes.
How do I use the hardware credential?
  1. Order and activate your hardware credential.
  2. Log into your account.
  3. When prompted, enter the security code on your hardware credential.

It's really that simple!

Will it work with my computer?
The hardware credential works with any computer operating system and Web browser that can access the Web site.
How does the hardware credential work?
The hardware credential generates a unique six-digit security code about every 30 seconds. You enter that code when you log into your account with your regular username and password. Then the code expires so that no one else can use it.
The hardware credential creates the account access code by using a complex algorithm that's unique to your device. When you enter that code after you log in with your username and password, our secure servers can verify your identity more securely. This helps prevent unauthorized users from logging into your account.
What if I lose or break my hardware credential?
You can still log in to your account if you lose or break your hardware credential, or if you don't have it in your possession. Before you can log in, we will ask you to confirm your account ownership.
Where should I keep my hardware credential?
You should keep it with you so that you can access your account information, no matter where you are. It's compact and can fit on your keychain or your wallet, so you can easily take it with you wherever you go. We recommend that you don't store the hardware credential with your computer.
How much does it cost?
The NameSafe service is free for Name.com customers. Currently we limit each account to one credential. The cost of the hardware depends on which credential type you decide to use, FOB, card, or Bring Your Own. Check out the order page for current pricing.
