CEO Kills Elephant

The recent video of GoDaddy’s CEO, Bob Parsons, killing an elephant that was causing damage to farmer’s crops is all over the web. Between the professionally edited video to the release of it on his personal blog, we’re confident they knew what was coming and even invited the publicity (shocking, we know). It didn’t take long before PETA had declared a boycott against the company and Twitter feeds were blowing up with Anti-GoDaddy tweets.

A number of domain registrars and hosting companies have offered discounts to move away from GoDaddy and pledged to donate a percentage of the proceeds to elephant related charities. We applaud their effort to raise funds for these worthy causes, whatever their motivations may be. We debated internally how we could best respond to the situation, as making a quick buck didn’t sit right with us, no matter how tempting. Of course we want folks to know we are a great option if they are leaving their current registrar, but giving back is also a part of our company culture Name.com Gives Back. We really wanted to do something to help the situation, which was sadly brought to light by this incident.

Name.com has made a seed donation to ElephantPepper.org in the amount of $500, because we believe it’s the right thing to do. This organization benefits the elephants, the local farmers, and the habitat they both have to share. More interesting however is the alternative solution they have found. Turns out elephants hate chili peppers so they focus their efforts on training farmers to use chili peppers as a natural deterrent (we’re all about innovative solutions).

Many people have reached out and asked what we could do if they wanted to transfer their domains away. In addition to the seed donation we have decided to donate $1.00 from each domain that is transferred to us from GoDaddy, starting today and running through April 15. We want to give folks some time to move their domains and a little help if they have a lot to move. If you have more than 50 domains to transfer, email our support team at support@name.com and we can offer assistance with any bulk transfers.

Name.com Android App Gets Local

Local Search

We weren’t kidding when we told you we’d be updating our Android app to include even cooler features. Our lead developer on the app, Owen, officially launched ’91local search’ this week. The local search feature uses the phone’s GPS to detect the latitude and longitude and then searches domain names for local businesses around that location.

The feature is a great way for businesses to locate strong keyword domains to register that will help them drive more business to their existing site. Geo domain investors rejoice! Now you can enjoy endless inspiration for hot geo domain suggestions from wherever you may be. Personally I’m surprised at how many local shops don’t have their domains registered! It’s a great opportunity to share with your favorite coffee shop barista or hairdresser why they should get their business online. It’s also fun just to search and poke around.

How To:

From within the app simply click on the ’91Location’ button from the menu. The tool will automatically detect your latitude and longitude (make sure your GPS is turned on) and then pull available domains based on places around your location.

Don’t Have an Android?

Don’t feel left out; for those of you who don’t have Android phones (we’re still planning on an iPhone app summer 2011!) you can test out this (beta) search functionality here: www.name.com/localsearch

We hope you enjoy playing around with the new tool! Let us know what you think.

Help our video get more views than the GoDaddy Super Bowl commercial!!

Geeze, we’re up to our ears in buzz over the GoDaddy SuperBowl commercial. So they’re going to ’91unveil’ a new .CO girl, it might even be a blonde this time, ooooh, big deal! We will admit though, the hype did get us talking, but we quickly came to the conclusion that long gone are the days where a $3million dollar investment on a Super Bowl ad is worth it. We’ve got tens of thousands of potential views via the World Wide Web, so why not try that route? So in under 48 hours we pulled off our own Super Bowl commercial, at a fraction of the price. What does this mean for you? Well, we’re not going to try to sell you on sex appeal, instead we thought we’d simply lower our price. So check it out; register your .CO domain for just $7.77. Has a nice ring to it right? Jackpot! We’re going to throw .COM into the mix too- .CO and .COM just $7.77, this offer is only valid 2/6-2/12 on first time registrations.

Oh yeah and be sure to check out our video. I’m sure you’ll quickly see we’re not professionals. We did the best we could in the time we had and we hope you enjoy. While you’re at it, share it with a friend. 🙂

New Office Digs!

We are so excited! Our recent move took us across town from the Lowry district of Denver, Colorado westward over to the heart of Cherry Creek. Months of planning surely paid off as the new space is shaping up to be nothing short of fantastic! We now look as vibrant as we feel. With the move comes increased visibility for Name.com, which we are ready for. We’re hoping to get more name recognition since after all; we are Colorado’s largest domain registrar.

The new space has a modern look and feel. It was important to Bill, who is an artist at heart, to be in a space that fosters creativity and aids in the process of ’91making things’ whether that be ideas or products. With our new central location already members of the Name team have decided to leave their cars parked at home and hop on a bike or hit the pavement by foot to get here. Personally, i’m going to wait until the snow melts 🙂

Check out the pictures below and tell us what you think! Feel free to take the virtual tour as well. WARNING: Video will more than likely make you dizzy (It was my first video and my footage is really shaky. My apologies, I’ll get a better one up soon!) New Office Digs!

Websites For the Halloween Fan

If you couldn’t tell, we’re just a tad excited about Halloween! For the fans out there like us, here are some cool Halloween related websites we’ve come across. What are some of your favorites?

Countdown to Halloween

True to the title, CountdownToHalloween.com is a blog featuring random Halloween coolness.

Spirit Halloween

A lot of costume sites can be a strain on the eyes, but SpiritHalloween.com has created a clean website with a ton of costumes to choose from. We realize it’s probably a little late to order something, but you can always bookmark for next year. 🙂

Threadless

Okay, so Threadless isn’t a Halloween site per se, but they are running a killer deal on their scary-themed tees. Score!

Halloween Forum

HalloweenForum.com is, you guessed it, a great place to chat it up with other Halloween fans. If you’re looking for craft, costume, or party ideas..look no further.

Haunted Houses

HauntedHouses.com is a spooky guide to haunted houses (both real and attractions) across the United States.

Opacity

A photographic exploration of abandoned buildings and places, Opacity.us is related to Halloween more in atmosphere than anything else. Great use of an alternative extension too. 😉

New to the Team: Robert Church

Everyone, meet Robert. Robert joined us earlier in the summer as one of our systems administrators and he’s probably best known as the guy who stays up all night cranking when there are things like outages. A transplant from Fort Worth, TX to Colorado, Robert came to Name.com with many years in the hosting industry under his belt.

Prior to working in hosting, he was a yakuza assassin that specialized in knives. Even though he was quite good at his job, he felt the lack of benefits and worker’s comp were too much of a liability. He decided to leave the yakuza lifestyle for a more rewarding career in systems administration. However, that doesn’t mean he’s any less sharp at his job! Ba dum bum.

Bad puns aside, Robert has been a fantastic addition to the Name.com team. We’re very excited to have him on board and we hope you will join us in welcoming him.

Question: What’s Your Favorite Domain?

Yes, we’re feeling curious again! This time we’d love to hear what your favorite domain names are that you own (or have owned). Whether it’s your favorite for sentimental reasons, because it’s your business domain and makes you money, or even just because it’s a little witty, we want to know!

You know the drill, a random commenter will win $25 in account credit, so let us have it! What are some of your favorites??

Name.com is Growing, Check Out Our New Office Space!

New Name.com Office from Name.com on Vimeo.

We’re very excited to show you guys a sneak peek at our new office space! Our current office has served us well for the past few years, but we’re happy to say that we’ve outgrown this space and it’s time to move to an office that can handle this and future growth. There’s a lot of demolition that needs to be done at the new place, so we won’t be moving until closer to the end of the year.

Here’s a look at our current office:

And here’s what our new office looks like (pre-demolition):

This new space is a lot bigger and actually used to be a gym; almost everything in the middle including closets, showers, hot tub (sniffles), etc. will be torn down so you’ll be able to see clearly from one end to the other. Even though we’re moving, we want to make sure we keep the open and creative feeling of our current office.

It’s an exciting time at Name.com and we look forward to showing you more as things progress with the new office!
