Denver is known for a lot of things: Being a mile above sea level, its close proximity to the ski slopes, the National Western Stockshow. But ask a local what the best part about working and living in Denver is, and they’re likely to give you a very different answer.
Hack the Dot came to Seattle last week to bring lots of nerdy goodness to The Emerald City. About 60 people—designers, devs, marketers, bloggers, and a few wayward souls yet to be defined by professional labels—dove into the task of creating a functional web product for a domain name revealed at the start of the event: sandwich.news.
Armed with free pizza and beer, it seemed like participants could accomplish anything … and they did. The teams created everything from an animated talking sandwich to a horoscope that aligns your sign with the sandwich that’s right for you. There was even a Chrome plugin to soften the news with sandwich-related nouns (Cecil the Lion was shot with a pickle, for example).
It’s been ridiculously gorgeous here in Denver for the past few weeks, so it was only a matter of time until the Name.com team came up with an excuse to go grill and share some beers in the park. Last Wednesday, we closed up the office early for a barbecue filled with food, family, and PBR.
We’re heading to the Pacific Northwest to host a Hack the Dot hackathon with General Assembly at Impact Hub next week. On July 28, 2015, 80 or so people will come together in Seattle to unleash their magical coding abilities and get nerdy. This is the first Hack the Dot to be hosted outside of Colorado, and Seattle was a natural fit to expand to first. Seattle is a city fueled by tech giants like Amazon and Microsoft, and is also home to our parent company Rightside. The people of Seattle are extremely motivated to build products with meaning, and it’s an upbeat and fun tech community.

Ahh, how the time flies. It seems just yesterday that .NINJA was a newborn. Now it’s one year old. It’s grown so big! It’s taken its first steps! It’s eating solid food! It’s sleeping through the night … sometimes!

About three weeks ago, we picked up an office chair from the office of Quick Left in Boulder. After many hours of @jaredewy drilling at and modifying our chair, the day came to race what has become known as the “office chairIOT” around the streets of Downtown Boulder. We put together a quick gallery of our adventuring around Boulder trying to hunt down clues and beat the other teams. Sadly, we didn’t win… but we immediately made our way to Tahona to eat some tacos and devise a training plan to win next year. Here’s a peek at how we’ll train on race week next year:
