By day, Statton Hammock is the VP, Business & Legal Affairs at Rightside and our go-to expert on all things business, legal, and registry operations policy. But in his free time, Statton has a very different hobby—mixing tracks and DJing at events as his alter ego, DJ STATN.
We’re very excited to announce that DJ STATN will be keeping the NamesCon crowds pumped up while performing at the conference’s Sunday Night Cocktail Party!
Statton started DJing events back when he was just 14 years old, when DJing simply meant switching tracks between a turntable and cassette player. It wasn’t until years later during a visit to Tao in Las Vegas that his desire to DJ and produce house music was rekindled. He took lessons for 3 months to learn about DJ techniques and mixing before breaking out on his own. “After that I bought a bunch of equipment and started playing wherever I could—mostly in my basement,” says Statton in an interview with NameCon.
Statton’s style is influenced by some of his favorite DJs including Maurizio Colella (better known as EDX) and Diplo. He creates tracks based on anything around him that he finds inspiring, whether that’s a conversation, a song, or an emotion. Once he’s chosen a base track with a great hook and chorus, it takes around two or three hours to mix it into something new—and Statton finds that plane trips are the perfect time to do it. “Often the person sitting next to me can’t resist asking me what I am doing,” says Statton. “When I explain it, they want to listen. Surprising, lots of older folks like house music … or else they’re just being nice.
We’re excited to see one of our own helping to make the upcoming NamesCon conference one for the books. If you’re planning to attend, be sure to swing by the Sunday Night Cocktail Party to jam out to some great tunes, courtesy of DJ STATN!
