The more we find out about our customers, the more we discover that we’re all the same. We all have domain names that we don’t use. We all get more ideas than we can ever execute, and a lot of us seem a little leery of that step between getting a domain and doing something with it. That’s why we’re talking to people about how they turned their idea into a money-making venture. No more getting stuck. It’s time to iterate your plan into an easy-to-use web interface, and here are the people to help get you there.

Today, meet Patrick of Mousepads.cool. Necessity is most definitely the mother of invention.

These are the stories of people getting their domain name and then making things happen. Welcome, Patrick Doyle, who started his business the way most of us do.

Patrick: There wasn’t a mouse pad on the planet big enough for my forearm, so I said, “I’m going to find the world’s biggest mouse pad.”

Jared: And how did that go?

Patrick: They didn’t exist. I mean, I think the biggest thing I could find at the time was a two-and-a-half or a three-footer. And I said, “You know what? I’m going to cover the entire desk.”

Jared: I’m sensing that necessity is about to have another child.

Patrick: Yes. I had built the website and was looking for a new TLD and everything that I found in the .com world and everything else was boring and played and old, and then I came across you guys.

Jared: (aside) Who are we guys? Well, we have Identity Digital domains and they have incredible keywords that are available and affordable, just like Patrick’s website, mousepads.cool.

Patrick: And I have to tell you, the .cool TLD has done as much for our marketing effort as any single thing that we’ve ever done.

Jared: Okay, so you get the domain you want, but what’s next?

Patrick: We didn’t know anything when we started this. We knew we had a great product. It took us literally a year and a half to teach the factory how to make these, and we think we have probably the finest tracking service of any gaming mouse pad in the world.

Jared: This is where a lot of people get stuck. What did you do for e-commerce?

Patrick: Shopify has worked for us, and it’s just one of those set-it-and-forget-it solutions. Once it’s set up, you don’t have to mess with it.

Jared: (aside) So, using cool domain trickery, he has shop.mousepads.cool subdomain set up for Shopify, and then mousepads.cool? Well, that goes to his site that shares all his things like his incredible marketing acumen.

Patrick: Early October of 2015, I sent Linus Tech Talk two mouse pads, two Padzillas … We didn’t know it was even coming. He didn’t even reach out to us and say, “Hey, we’ve got the video. We want you to see it.” He just published it and well, off we were running, and we’ve never looked back.
