What is a .AM domain?

Armenia Map

The .AM domain is actually a ccTLD (country code top level domain) and the Internet country code for Armenia. Located in Southwestern Asia, east of Turkey, the Republic of Armenia gained its independence from the Soviet Union on September 21, 1991. The country covers 11,483.84 square miles, an area slightly smaller than Maryland. With a population of 2,968,586 (July, 2008), almost 98% speaks Armenian, while the remainder consists of Yezidi (Kurd) 1.3%, Russian 0.5%, other languages 0.3%.

Why should I register a .AM domain name?

Although the extension is sometimes used for sites associated with the country of Armenia, it has been marketed for use in the broadcasting field. For obvious reasons, .AM has taken off in podcast and audio-related websites. This domain is perfect for radio broadcasting, Internet-Only Stations, and broadcast service providers. After all, 'a great sounding web address ends in dotAM!'

Registering ccTLDs offers another way to protect your online identity, as well as your business’s. We all know how important it is to protect our personal identity. The same should be true when considering the identity of your business or trademark online. Your assets are important whether in the form of a bank account or a domain name, and they need to be protected. When you register your trademark in a ccTLD domain, you are taking one more step to protect what is critical to you and your livelihood. By purchasing your trademark in a ccTLD, you do not have to worry about a competitor acquiring that name. Think how much easier it is to be the original owner instead of attempting to procure the domain from another party.

If you are looking to own domains with shorter names or more common words, ccTLDs may be the way to go. As we all know, attempting to obtain these types of domain in more popular extensions is futile. Most ccTLD domains are still becoming populated, dramatically increasing the chances that your domain is available. Additionally, ccTLDs lend themselves greatly to domain hacks. With a domain like .AM, there are endless possibilities (ex: greeneggsandh.am, ma.am, or shaz.am).

Are there any restrictions for registering a .AM?

No. .AM has no restrictions for registering a domain. This means that any person from any part of the world and/or any company is welcome to register. It is important to note that every domain is subject to review. For religious reasons, Armenian law prohibits its domain names from being used for obscene sites. The right to revoke registrations due to obscenity or other illegal or immoral activity is reserved by the registry.
