A conversation with Glenn Joseph

Take us back to the moment you realized this business had to exist. Was it a lightbulb moment or a slow burn?

It was a bit of both. After leaving the military, I worked in the suit department at Nordstrom. I watched colleagues who had been there for over a decade making six figures, and while that was impressive, I realized I didn’t want to spend ten or fifteen years in a mall. I noticed the natural effect I had on people and realized I possessed a unique eye for styling and fashion. I had the charisma, the drive, and the resources to do this myself outside of a large conglomerate. The true “lightbulb” moment happened one Saturday while I was sitting at work; I simply realized I didn’t want to do it anymore, and I filed for my LLC shortly after.

What was the very first ‘grown-up’ thing you did for the business?

The first major step was filing my LLC. Once that happened, everything felt real. I began taking control of my journey, tracking my finances, and learning the formal business side of the industry to complement my raw talent.

Do you have a mission statement or a mantra your business operates by?

My primary goal is instilling confidence in people and providing a space where they can feel truly good about how they present themselves to the world. I want to be a resource and a segue for my clients to eventually become leaders of their own style. This mission is anchored in being sustainably conscious and building a strong community.

How did you land on your business name? Were there any ‘near misses’ or funny names you almost picked?

The name Glenn Joseph is actually my full middle name, shared with my grandfather, whom I am very close to. I wanted a name that represented my history and someone who looked out for me.

My “near miss” was Gray Label. My father is black and my mother is white, so I liked the idea that “black and white make gray”. However, I discovered the name was already copyrighted by a children’s clothing brand, which forced me to get more creative and eventually embrace my own name.

If your brand was a person, how would you describe their personality in three words?

I would describe the brand as confident, collected, and elegant.

When it comes to your online identity, what is one thing you refused to compromise on?

I am very specific about the aesthetic and the message of sustainability. For my website, it was non-negotiable that the primary color be a forest green—reflecting the earth, trees, and the recycling symbol. I wanted the digital experience to feel inviting and warm, using earth tones like brown, cream, and taupe rather than just cluttering the screen with content.

If your business was a kitchen, what are the three tools you couldn’t cook without?

  • Canva: My partner is a “wizard” on there, and it’s been essential for all our branding and social media .
  • Recording Equipment: I can’t function without a tripod and a microphone to capture high-quality content and B-roll of my process .
  • Spreadsheets: I keep detailed size charts for my models and clients on my computer to ensure everything is precise .

What’s one digital hurdle you hit early on that you wish someone had warned you about?

The “sticker shock” of website builders was a major hurdle. I found a platform I liked that advertised a reasonable monthly rate, but by the time I reached the final checkout, the price had nearly quadrupled due to hidden fees and various add-ons. It was a frustrating deterrent that made me hesitant to finalize my online presence.

What’s the one piece of advice you received that actually changed how you run things?

It wasn’t a specific quote, but rather the experience of watching a documentary on Kenneth Cole. Seeing how vocal he was about marginalized groups and his level of community involvement inspired me. It made me realize that my purpose is bigger than just fashion; I need to be in the community, working with nonprofits and using my leadership skills to give back.

Building a digital presence for Glenn Joseph

A successful stylist needs a web presence that makes a strong impression on prospective clients. Initially Glenn relied exclusively on social media to find new clients. But a web presence featuring a strong domain, an informative and visually appealing website and a custom email address will open new avenues for acquiring new business. Clients can now find him through web and LLM searches, see his entire portfolio of work and reach out via a simple online form to arrange for a styling.

Working with name.com’s resident designer Makenzi LeMay, Glenn established his web presence using name.com’s best-in-class tools:

  • For the domain, Glenn opted for the .style TLD, which allowed him to create a memorable, concise and descriptive web address GlennJoseph.style.
  • For the website, Glenn selected Wix website builder which allows him to easily stand up a website without coding skills, while knowing that Wix has the tools for him to scale as his business grows.
  • Lastly, Glenn opted for a custom Gmail address via name.com’s Google Workspace offering. In addition to a professional email address, Glenn also has a suite of tools – documents, spreadsheets, calendar – that are essential for growing a small business.

Glenn Joseph’s journey from a Nordstrom sales floor to entrepreneur is a powerful testament to the impact of betting on one’s own unique vision. By grounding his brand in personal history and a non-negotiable commitment to sustainability, Glenn has transformed a natural gift for fashion into a purpose-driven business that prioritizes authentic confidence over mere consumption. With his new digital home at GlennJoseph.style and a professional toolkit powered by name.com, he is no longer just a stylist in the making, but a community-focused leader ready to help his clients—and his business—show up for the world “on purpose.”
