Adding MX records for hosted email

Last Updated: November 17, 2023

If you are using one of our hosting packages for your email, the first thing you will need to do to set up your account is add the MX record for the hosted email. You can do this by using Name.com's pre-made Hosted Email DNS Template. To do that, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your Name.com account.
  2. Click the My Products link.
  3. Click on your hosting product. This will bring you to your Hosting Dashboard.
  4. Scroll down to the heading DNS Management. Click the DNS Templates button.
  5. In the drop-down menu that appears, select Hosting Email and then click Confirm.

This will add a record that looks like this:

Type Host Answer TTL Prio
MX exampledomain.com exampledomain.com 300 10

This MX record works under the assumption that your A records are also pointing to hosting. If you have not already applied the Hosting DNS Template, you can do so by following the steps above and choosing Hosting in the dropdown menu. This MX record points to the bare A record on your domain, and if you are using Name.com hosting, then that bare A record also points to the hosting.

If you are using your hosting plan for email only, and your A records (for hosting your website) are pointing somewhere else, you will need slightly different DNS records. You will need:

Type Host Answer TTL Prio
MX exampledomain.com mail.exampledomain.com 300 10
A mail.exampledomain.com [your hosting IP address] 300  N/A

The records above set up a subdomain specifically to route your mail through. In this case, “mail.exampledomain.com” will point to your hosting, but you are free to point your bare domain and other subdomains anywhere you wish without your mail being affected. If you are not sure where to find your hosting IP address, you can find it on your hosting dashboard.
