At name.com, our mission is to make building simple at any scale. But building a great online presence is only part of the story; we also believe deeply in the power of community giving. That is why we are spotlighting our partner Food for Thought Denver, a fantastic nonprofit doing vital work right in our hometown of Denver, Colorado. Alongside their story, we are highlighting the .ORG domain, the gold standard for mission-driven groups looking to build trust online.
Closing the Weekend Hunger Gap
Every Friday morning, hundreds of volunteers gather to pack bags of food for school children. This effort is the heartbeat of Food for Thought Denver, an organization working to close the weekend hunger gap for students across the metro area. Founded in 2012 with just two schools, the organization has grown into a movement that now serves more than 91 schools and tens of thousands of children every week.
This work is critical. In Denver, one in seven children experiences food insecurity. When kids do not have reliable access to food, they face empty stomachs, distracted classrooms, and lost opportunities to learn to their full potential.

Simple Solutions, Honest Practices
Food for Thought Denver tackles this massive challenge with a beautifully simple, human approach. Volunteers fill “PowerSacks” with 10 to 15 shelf-stable items, enough food to help feed a family of four through the weekend.
To eliminate any social stigma, the organization distributes these bags to every single student in a participating school. There are no applications, no lines, and no singling children out. This ensures that families get the help they need quietly and safely.
Even more remarkable is how the organization manages its resources. Food for Thought is entirely volunteer-run and operates with zero paid staff members. Because board members and private supporters cover administrative expenses separately, 100% of public donations go directly toward buying food for kids.
To give you a closer look at their mission, we asked the team and volunteers about what keeps them moving forward, how they listen to the community, and the role their digital presence plays in making an impact.

Q: Food for Thought has grown incredibly fast, yet you still operate without any paid staff. Why is that model so important to you?
A: Bob Bell, Founder – Food for Thought Denver
We were committed at the very beginning, and still are today, to never letting this become just a job. We always want our work to come straight from the heart. Operating as an all-volunteer organization ensures that our focus stays entirely on the kids in our local neighborhoods who need our help.
Q: How do you make sure the food you provide is actually meeting the needs of the families you serve?
A: Erin Pilling, CEO – Food Bank of the Rockies
We take great care in making sure we provide highly nutritious food. It has been a fantastic experience to gather direct feedback from the community to learn what items are most desired and what the kids enjoy the most. That feedback allows us to be highly responsive, making sure we deliver the exact food families need, right when and where they need it.
Q: You use a .ORG domain for your website. How critical is that domain and your online presence to your day-to-day operations?
A: Bob Bell, Founder – Food for Thought Denver
Simply put, if we did not have our .ORG site, we would not have anything. But the marketing of our website, our social media is everything. It is the digital hub that allows someone to donate five dollars to build a bag of food, or allows neighbors to sign up and volunteer with us. Our arms are always open, and our website is the front door that makes community participation simple and accessible. You know, we don’t have anything else except that .ORG. And if we didn’t have it, you couldn’t find us. And because of that, we’re found and, you Google childhood hunger in Denver, and we’re at the top.
Q: After more than a decade of doing this work, what is the most rewarding part of the experience?
A: Blanche Kapushion, Education Consultant
It is seeing the immediate impact on Friday afternoons. When you see moms and kids taking those bags home, knowing they have food for the weekend, the look of relief, the smiles, and the gratitude on their faces is worth a million dollars. It is powerful to work alongside people who know exactly what the community needs and show up consistently to make it happen.
